Husky Expedition - Finnmark

Using a team of 4-legged friends explore the stunning beauty of the Finnmark Mountain Plateau in Northern Norway

Overview

This 3 day husky expedition takes you to Finnmarksvidda (Finnmarks Mountain Plateau) in northern Norway, a wild and wonderful snow-desert covering 22,000 square kilometres including two national parks, Øvre Anarjohka and Stabbursdalen. It is the winter home of the indigenous Sami and their vast reindeer herds and hosts the world’s northern most husky sledding race, Finnmarksløpet. The competitors race across 1000km of wild wilderness in Northern Norway. Trine, the head guide, has competed on numerous occasions!

During this holiday you will drive your own team of huskies and experience the truly remarkable famous blue Arctic light from the low lying winter sun and ribbons of greens, blues and purples as the northern lights dance across the dark starry sky. Your evenings are spent appreciating the spectacular mountain scenery from simple mountain cabins originally built for the nomadic Sami and government mountain workers, but are now used by the locals or adventurous visitors.

This holiday is designed for those who are looking for a hands-on, back to basics wilderness experience who appreciate the outdoor way of life in remote and unique parts of our incredible world. Don’t be surprised if you get up close and personal with your four-legged friends and leave with a tear in your eye!

Itinerary

Day 1
Fly from the UK to Alta (via Oslo).
20min transfer to the lodge by the Alta River.
Warm welcome, husky briefing, issue of equipment.
Delicious evening meal.

Day 2:
Breakfast and early start to make best use of the available daylight.
Pack up the sleds and your guide will give you a list of names that make up your husky team.
Find your huskies and harness them to your sled.
Safety briefing and off you go!
The first 4km is along the famous Alta River and this part is a little steep. You need to help your huskies a little.
That’s the hard bit out of the way - continue the gentle climb on to the plateau over frozen lakes and through the mountains.
Help to prepare a hot lunch over a warming fire and relax.
For the final stretch before reaching the mountain lodge you can simply enjoy the ride, the nature and the Arctic light.
On arrival at the mountain lodge your first priority is your team of huskies.
Secure them for the evening and prepare their high energy food.
Once the huskies have been taken care of it’s time to prepare your own meal and wait for the Northern Lights. Will they appear tonight?

Day 3:
Life in the mountains is stress free and relaxing.
Tend to your husky team and as they digest their food you enjoy a hearty breakfast and plan the route.
There are several options and you will help select the route based on the weather conditions and your adventurous spirit.
Lunch is once again served around an open fire in the wilderness.
When you return to the mountain lodge it’s time to take care of the dogs before preparing your own evening meal.
With any luck the northern lights will dance to the sound of nature.

Day 4:
Time to feed the dogs, eat breakfast and pack up your equipment.
Today is downhill all the way descending the hills you climbed on the first day of this adventure.
Plenty of stops as driving your husky team downhill is hard work.
A wilderness lunch around an open fire by the Alta River.
Back at the kennels, remove the harnesses and return the dogs to their individual kennels.
Relax and shower at the lodge as the chef prepares your evening meal.
Relaxing evening to reminisce about your husky adventure.

Accommodation

Norway Mountain Cabins

These are simple, rustic cabins in remote locations, often inaccessible by road and originally built for those working in the mountains and the nomadic Sami following their migrating reindeer herds through the wilderness.

Today they provide shelter to those venturing deep into the mountains. They may not have running water or electricity and often have dormitory style bedrooms.  These cabins are sociable locations and a place to shelter from the elements, stay warm and tell stories around an open fire. When staying in these locations you really do appreciate that we are such a small part of the nature around us.

Stengelsegårdenis Lodge - Alta

Stengelsegårdenis Lodge is by the Alta River, which originates on the Finnmark Plateau and flows through the Alta Canton into the Alta Fjord. With just 10 bedrooms and 19 beds this is a small and personal location just 20mins from the city of Alta. The simple comfortable bedrooms are all ensuite and wifi is available throughout the lodge. The area is free from artificial light so you simply have to step outside to see the northern lights.

The lounge and dining room offer a spacious open plan comfortable area to relax in front of a roaring open fire. All meals are prepared using locally sourced ingredients by Johnny Trasti, Trines partner (your head husky guide), who is recognised as one of the leading chefs in Norway.
