Snowhotel - Kirkenes (Norway)

Experience the magic of Snowhotel located in Kirkenes, a Norwegian town on the Russian border with a rich culture and fascinating history.

Overview

Kirkenes is a small Norwegian town on the edge of Europe at the Russian border. It is also the last port of call for the famous Hurtigruten Coastal Steamer making such a remote location relatively accessible.

Every winter Snowhotel is built on the shores of a frozen fjord outside Kirkenes, deep in the wilderness and away from artificial light. It is a prime location from which to be mesmerised by the northern lights as they work their magic across the night sky.

Each of the 20 rooms at Snowhotel is unique and is hand carved in snow and ice. Clever lighting gives impressive results and you can sleep soundly in thick arctic
sleeping bags on insulated mattresses at a constant -4C, no matter how cold it gets outside. 15 tonnes of ice are used to build snowbar, where you can enjoy an Arctic cocktail from an ice glass that slowly moulds itself to your lips. ‘Simply relax and enjoy!’

The new warm cabins are designed around the Sami ‘gamme’ cabins found in the Arctic wilderness. With large panoramic windows, fjord views and comfortable chairs covered in sheepskin, you don’t need to venture outside to wait for the northern lights. One of the major attractions of this holiday is the flexibility Simply Sweden can bring to your holiday, combined with many of our other northern Norway holidays.

In May, after the northern lights have given way to the powerful midnight sun, Snowhotel slowly melts away and returns to nature... until next year.
