Southern Fjords - Fly Drive

Travelling by car in Norway puts you in control of your holiday. You decide the route and the time you travel. This is your holiday - you decide!

Overview

Pack your camera with extra batteries and enjoy the drive!

On this holiday we have carefully selected four National Tourist Routes, which are scenic roads for exploring Norway's breath-taking landscapes and many offer spectacular fjord views. These tourist routes have been designated by the Norwegian government as areas of outstanding natural beauty and areas which Norway wants to show off to the international community. We won't advise the most direct route - that isn't the point of this holiday!

The National Tourist Routes
The National Tourist Routes you will experience are: Hardanger, driving along the side of the Hardangerfjord and Sorfjord; Hardangervidda, northern Europe's largest mountain plateau; Aurlandsfjället , with amazing views of the fjord landscape;  Gaularfjellet, with protected waterfalls and tranquil mountain lakes.

The Fjords
The fjords on show during this tour are plentiful. Here is just a small selection: the famous Hardangerfjord; Hotel Ullensvang sits on the edge of Sorfjord; the famous Flåm railway (one of the world’s steepest); the world’s longest fjord, Sognefjord.

Kviknes Hotel - Sognefjord

The Kvikne family have been the hosts here since 1877. Kviknes Hotel is beautifully located beside the Sognefjord in Balestrand. There have been many new buildings, reconstructions and extensions since 1877, but none of this has altered the special character of this place. Kviknes is now a modern hotel with old-world charm and atmosphere with 190 guest rooms (mixture of modern and historic rooms). The hotel is graced with an extensive collection of artwork and antiques, which give it its special style.
